Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As January 2026 approaches, businesses must gear up for crucial tax deadlines that could impact their fiscal health. Proactive planning ensures compliance, helps avoid penalties, and keeps operations running smoothly.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Due

Employers, if you fall under the monthly deposit requirements, January 15 is your deadline to electronically deposit your Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025 payrolls. Similarly, nonpayroll withholding deposits for December 2025 are due if you adhere to the monthly rules. Remember, electronic deposits are mandatory unless your liability falls below $2,500 for a return period, in which case quarterly or annual remittance with your return is permissible.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen

For farmers and fishermen, it's time to pay your 2025 estimated tax using Form 1040-ES. While your income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) isn't due until April 15, failure to pay your estimated tax by January 15 means you’ll need to file your 2025 return and settle any tax liabilities by March 2, 2026, to sidestep an estimated tax penalty.

Handling Weekends & Holidays

If a tax deadline lands on a weekend or legal holiday, it naturally extends to the next business day that isn't a holiday. This allows for slight breathing room for those complying with these time-sensitive obligations.
